Spiritual Direction Formation Program
Sunday, June 3 - Saturday, June 9
VMESC offers a four-year formation program in spiritual direction. This program was fashioned with a unique design to accommodate those who cannot afford the time for a lengthy residential program, yet desire quality and time to discern their call to the ministry of spiritual direction. Spiritual directors are called by God and formed by God.

Through this program we hope to provide the space, time, and structure where the Spirit can deepen and fine-tune the gifts of the candidates. This formation experience includes a resident week at Villa Maria each June which provides the opportunity for integrating theology, spirituality, and formal practice in giving spiritual direction. During the other weeks of the year, the candidate is guided by participation in
- readings and short reflection papers
- spiritual direction
- an annual directed retreat
- a monthly theological reflection group
Each person may begin giving spiritual direction under individual supervision after their first residential week while receiving the continued support of a network of monthly peer supervision and theological reflection groups. Cultivating a more contemplative and reflective lifestyle is the long-range goal of this formation program, as each candidate discerns God’s call to the wonderful ministry of spiritual direction.

Those who complete the program having given spiritual direction under supervision will receive a Certificate in Spiritual Direction. Those who discern that ministry in spiritual direction is not for them will receive a Certificate in Spirituality.
